Olski presents MORE MPM SOUND
Time keeps on slipping into the future and this is exactlly where we are heading with our second label comp. "More MPM Sound" introduces a whole gang of new artists who are adding their flavors to the music of Lefties Soul Connection DJ Day, A-ko, Devil McDoom and Imperial Breed.
We got soul, we got funk and we got jazz. We got afro-beat and we got rock too. We are old school like that and that's why we still have breaks and consider this beautiful mash-up of styles, grooves and attitudes hip-hop. The game hasn't changed only the players, so let me give you a little run-down on who is with us this time:
I virtually travelled the world only to find the opener for this album right around the corner, at the Groove Attack record store in my hometown Cologne. That is where DJ Adlib is working when he is not making beats. Best known as a member of the turntablist crew Noisy Stylus, this young man is making some serious noise right now and he is kicking off the selection with just the right vibes.
I have to give props to Devil McDoom for hooking me up with the Phobos Peppl from Copenhagen. The righteous space funk of Martin Dejean and Daniel Muschinsky instantly blew my mind and it is still growning on me. I only found out later that the Peppl have been down with Upskiboo for years. Upskiboo is another Soul Strut regular turned MPM artist and it was the mighty Raj Mahal who turned me on to the breaks'n boogie sound of this talented producer from Skandinavia. Next in line is Palm Springs finest DJ Day who is blessing us with his hit single "Gone Bad". Day is the man, in case you didn't know and he's got a second song here, the soul-dripping latin-jazz groover "Lovebug".
Some listeners may ask at this point "Where is the funk?" The raw and gritty music that is part of the foundation of MPM. It's right here my dear friends, brought to you by Breakout. The trio from Hannover, Germany has layed down a heavy afro-funk version of "Planet Rock". Yes, we are talking about Bam's "Planet Rock" here, the mother of all electro tracks and you better believe what you hear.
When Kutiman from Tel Aviv became my friend on MySpace I was nothing less than shocked when I checked out the songs he had added to his his profile. The epic "No Groove In My Town" is one of the freshest and most original afro-beat songs I have heard in a long time. Our friends from the Afro Kats label in Toronto have just released "No Groove" as a 7" single and you better get your copy now! In my book this is Melting Pot Music in it's truest sense.
The next track is taking us back to Germany, Hamburg to be exact. This is where Hawkeye is orchestrating the mystery funk band Imperial Breed, a group that has been dubbed the missing link between Manzel and the Poets Of Rhythm. We stay in the groove with some serious ufo-ology courtesy of Devil Mc Doom. What started out as a short skit turned into a little song of it's own and sports all the spooky trademarks tricks McDoom is known for. Wicked! With The Soul Scapes from North England we are finally adding a British group to the MPM roster and the genius library funk sound of "Soul Summer" serves as a much needed break before young A-ko is taking us to "Chicago" with his hit-single of the same name. Another group that knows a good break when they dust off their weekend finds are Le Scratchfunk. Their 12" single "The Go Off !!" (aka "The Krautbreak Anthem") is a dj-favourite produced by MPM employee Sticky Dojah and his studio partner the Axt.
"The Mexican" by British rockers Babe Ruth is one of the greatest club-classics of all time. The song rocked Kool Herc's b-boy jams in the Bronx and David Mancuso's Loft parties uptown alike and it defines my concept of MPM better than any liner notes can. I already freaked when Marc "DJ" Hype and Jim Dunloop on the funky piano told me that they were working on a new version and when I finally heard the finished song I felt truly blessed to have the opportunity to release it.
