soso INTERVIEW

PLOP: First of all, please introduce yourself and tell us how you've started making music.

soso:I make beats, write songs and dj under the name soso. I've been getting my hands dirty for 10 years now...

PLOP:You also run the label called "clothes horse records".Please tell me know how the label has started.

soso:I spent quite a few summers riding on a lawnmower. The combination of vibrating machinery and a deafening drone created the perfect environment for endless scheming. After many sun burnt days of dreaming I came to the conclusion that I needed some sort of label to put out my music. With a small amount of money and no real knowledge of the recording industry, I put out my first record, sour suite.

PLOP:What is the concept of the label?

soso:The label is an enterprise built around a need to publicize my bad business decisions. It also provides an opportunity for me and my friends to get ourmusic out. The music is content-driven, sincere and the beats knock!

PLOP:What do you think you play Hip Hop?

soso:When I was young, hip hop gave me a social group to identify with... as I matured and started to contribute to the music, hip hop has become a creative outlet, and more importantly, a vehicle to explore and share my understanding of myself and the world around me.

PLOP:Please tell me what artists influenced your music.

soso:This may sound silly or contrived but I really fell in love with hip hop in the early 90's... Premier was (and is) so incredible. His music inspired me to dj so I could cut up little phrases over the hook and chop up samples to make beats. Vocally I was inspired by LMNO, the emergence of dope Canadian artists like Buck65 and closer to home, the legendary Peanuts & Corn crew.Lately I've been thinking about the direction of my work and I think it may rooted in my exposure to drinking tunes like The Browns, Hank Williams and Ray Price as a child...

PLOP:Your first release in 3 years,Tenth Street and Clarence is very beautiful and amazing album I think. What is the concept of this album? And what does the title mean?

soso:The title refers to the address of my current home on Tenth Street, just a few houses down the block from Clarence Avenue. It really reflects the personal nature of the work. I think the most meaningful, compelling lyrics are rooted in the personal and specific and I've been trying create an album that unravels the threads that connect my experiences with my family history and social climate. I'm not sure I've achieved that, but I am getting closer!

PLOP:Please tell me the music scene in Saskatoon.

soso:Saskatoon has a healthy music scene... I think being geographically isolated has bred a do-it-yourself attitude into people around here.

PLOP:You used to collaborate with shadowanimals in Belgium.Though they actively work with many Canadian artists, how has your interaction started? And what does the collaborations with another artists for you mean?

soso:well... first of all, it must be said that Tom from shadowanimals is a relentless networking machine! A machine! haha He was feeling my music and sent me a cavemen speak cd... I loved it! We started talking on msn messenger and the collaboration came out of those conversations. I haven't worked with too many other artists in the past... I haven't totally figured out why I'm so hesitant to collaborate, but I'm trying to work through it! I've started working on a project with some of my favourite canadian artists including Ira Lee, Yy and a few others...

PLOP:Please tell me your future release/project plans.

soso:we have a number of projects lined up for release including a CHR label compilation, a project I completed with Recyclone and Epic's album with Homesick Nomad and Cam the Wizzard. I also collaborated with Kutdown on an instrumental project that'll come out in the not too distant future.
